A teacher can easily deliver the subject by writing on chalkboard. Learners do not like oral presentation without some explanation.

Questions or problems to be discussed can be listed on the board. New or difficult words can be written down so that the student can copy or become familiar.

BENEFITS OF USING CHALKBOARD AS TEACHING MEDIA TO THE LEARNERS

A framework of the lecture may be set out on the board and can be filled in during the class. Sections of the framework can be rubbed out for revision purposes, the learners are then required to fill in the missing parts. It provides a means of progressing from simple to complex ideas and developing each explanation point by point.

It provides a space upon which learners can be asked to illustrate explanations so that the entire class can participate in what is being said.

Erase work as soon as its usefulness to the lesson has been expended where possible, summaries, words, sentences, figures or diagrams should be put up as they arise in the lesson. Label an elaborate drawing or diagram clearly as the lesson unfolds.

Stand sideways to the board when writing, so that your back is not turned completely to the class. Turn frequently and look at the class to establish eye contact.

NEWSPAPER AS A TEACHING AID

HOW NEWSPAPER CAN BE USED AS A TEACHING MEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM

Newspaper is the best teaching media one can use in teaching English as a Second Language. Using the newspaper in the classroom enables learners to integrate all skills necessary for learning a foreign language in a natural way. Learners talk about what they read in the papers; make judgments about it; listen to the judgments their classmates have made and can write about articles they have read. Newspapers, thus provide a stimulus to a wide range of communicative, task-based and integrated activities. Moreover, they contain practical vocabulary, the words learners will use over and over again throughout their lives.

BENEFITS OF USING NEWSPAPER AS TEACHING MEDIA TO THE LEARNERS

Newspaper is a valuable teaching tool. Students can benefit from newspaper lessons related to reading, writing, contents area subjects, and character development. According to Nuttal, C (1996), incorporating newspapers into English as a Second Language classroom offers the teacher authentic, practical, and easily accessible materials. Apart from that, by using newspaper in the classroom the process of language learning becomes relatively natural as learners are given real-world opportunities to apply or adapt knowledge.

HOW TO MAKE USE OF NEWSPAPER AS A TEACHING MEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM

As to the practical guidelines – before using the newspaper in the classroom, learners should be familiarized with the components of the newspaper, its various sections (e.g. news, sports, entertainment etc.) as well as with vocabulary items connected with the newspaper (e.g. editor, reporter etc.)

While getting acquainted with the newspaper learners are suggested a list of various sections of the newspaper. They are asked to find corresponding article and copy its headlines.

Below are different sections from The Namibian Newspaper

Then the learners are asked to answer the following questions:

v  When you read the newspaper which section do you never pass on?

v     v   Which sections do you rarely read? Write down specific comments (e.g., praise, criticism, or  suggestions for improvement)

After the learners have acquainted with the main features of the newspaper, and have enhanced the relevant skills and strategies, they can gradually perform more complex task-based activities based on the newspaper.
